Economic Efficiency



The investment cost for the entire superspeed maglev system (guideway, vehicle fleet, and supporting equipment) is similar to that for modern high-speed railroads. As the guideway can be flexibly adapted to the landscape, a comparison of investment costs for the guideway is the more favorable for the Transrapid the more difficult, i.e. hilly, the terrain is. The non-contact (and thus low wear) technology results in low maintenance expense and low energy consumption, and with the highly automatic operation, the operating expense is only about half that of railroads.
